Chen Jia'er (Peking University) China

Chen Jia'er, a nuclear physicist, was born in Shanghai in October 1934, graduated from the Department of Physics of Jilin University in 1954, and was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993, and as a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2001. He is a professor at Peking University. He was President of Peking University, Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Director of the Department of Mathematical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President of the Chinese Physical Society, and President of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Physical Societies.

He has long been devoted to research and teaching of particle accelerators and is the subject leader in the physics and technology of low-energy accelerators. He led the design and construction of the 4.5MV electrostatic accelerator and the modification and enhancement of the 2×6MV tandem electrostatic accelerator, and on this basis built the first carbon-14 ultra-sensitive accelerator mass spectrometer in China. He led the experiments, design and research on the new heavy ion RFQ acceleration structure and the RF superconducting acceleration cavity, achieving international advanced level results. He has contributed to the improvement of beam transport and utilization efficiency. He is the author of the book "The Collected Works of Chen Jia'er". He was awarded the First Prize of the National Education Commission's Science and Technology Progress Award and the First Prize of the National High Technology Research and Development Programme's "Eighth Five-Year Plan" Advanced Worker.
